Plain explanations of VPNs, Zero Trust, mesh networks and secure file sharing, and who each one is for.
Private networks, explained

Alice, Bob and Eve

So this site explains VPNs, Zero Trust, mesh networks and secure file sharing in plain words: what each one actually does, who it's for, what it's good at, and where it falls short.

About this site

Hi, I'm Lance. In just about every lesson on how encryption works, Alice and Bob are the two people trying to talk privately, and Eve is the one trying to listen in. Every product on this site exists to keep Eve out, and that's basically the test I put each one through: who does it protect you from, and who can still see what.

Now, I made this site because the whole field is explained in pieces. The VPN review sites stop at VPNs, and most of them earn a commission on the products they rank. The business side, Zero Trust and all the rest, is explained by the companies selling it. And nobody puts consumer VPNs, business remote access, mesh networks and self-hosted setups side by side for someone who's new to all of it.

So that's what this site does. Each guide answers one question the way people actually ask it, explains every term the first time it comes up, and compares products on the same facts. When a product isn't the right choice for you, the guide says so.

Something to note is that I work with the team that builds Ultimate VPN, and I have a financial stake in it. So any page that mentions Ultimate VPN says that right before it does, and compares it on exactly the same facts as everything else, including where it falls short. There are no affiliate links on this site, and no company pays to be here.
